My own transformation started my sophomore year in college when my best friend said to me, “Dude, you’re fat”. I immediately looked in the mirror and realized he was right. I had put on some serious pounds quickly, seemingly overnight. This hit me like a ton of bricks.

 

The late nights drinking with the crew, the reckless eating and the lack of a proper exercise routine had finally caught up to me.

 

No longer was I the scrawny person I once knew.

Now I was fat, soft and weak.

I knew at that moment I needed to make a change, but I had no clue where to start. Luckily for me, the same friend who said I was fat happened to be a very fit athlete who knew his way around the gym.


He took me under his wing and I learned an important lesson:


the value of coaching and accountability.


I’ve been paying it forward  by helping others ever since.

 

After college I went a bit too far. In my quest to get muscular, strong and shredded I literally tried it all.


Paleo, GOMAD, Clean eating, intermittent fasting, high carb, low carb, no carb, no fat, gluten free, IIFYM, vegetarian, fat loss pills, mass gainers, supplement stacks, powerlifting, HIIT, Tabata, circuit training, etc …you name it.


I thought that the only way to change how you looked was to have the perfect diet, perfect training plan and be 100% all in, all the time.  Sound familiar?

I was being too hard in myself and setting myself up for failure. It was due to a lack of balance. 


The list of self-imposed diet and training rules that was longer than I-95. It wasn’t sustainable. 


I actually said out loud that I would never have alcohol or pizza ever again!  I look back at that now and laugh.


After a ton of failures, a few injuries from following bad advice, and a few periods of crippling frustration I came to realize that 


balance is the key.


Having fewer rules actually led to better results.


I looked better and felt better. I stopped stressing so much and  started to live a happier life.


I had discovered….

Get fit quick schemes never work for long.


Great results came down to doing just a few key things very well.

  • Paying attention to overall intake
  • Choosing quality foods most of the time
